Amy Adams in the Bedroom and Phone Call Scenes from Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Amy Adams stars as Susan Morrow in “Nocturnal Animals” (2016), the stylish psychological thriller written and directed by Tom Ford. Susan is a wealthy Los Angeles gallery owner in an unhappy marriage to Hutton, played by Armie Hammer, who receives the manuscript of a violent novel written by her former husband, Edward, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. This clip opens with Susan and Hutton in bed together in their minimalist house, in a short scene that shows how distant they have become. She then spends a long stretch on the phone, curled up in a cardigan, anxious and shaken by what she has been reading, as Ford cuts back and forth between her face and the bedroom. The final shot comes from the novel’s story within the film: the bodies of two murdered women found on a red couch in the desert, the discovery that drives the fictional detective’s investigation. That image is shown as the grim heart of the crime story, not as nudity for its own sake. A beautifully made film with outstanding performances and a haunting final scene.
