Melissa Maria Carton and Olivia Romão in the Brothel Scene from A Dangerous Fortune (2016)

Melissa Maria Carton and Olivia Romão appear in “A Dangerous Fortune” (2016), the German television adaptation of Ken Follett’s novel about the Pilaster banking dynasty in Victorian London. The story follows ambition, greed and murder among the family and the people who orbit them, including the ruthless Micky Miranda and the weak heir Edward Pilaster. This scene is set in a candlelit brothel where wealthy men in masks gather for a decadent party. Among the women working there, one has a red ball gag in her mouth while a man stands behind her, and the scene makes clear that her situation is about the men’s power rather than her own choice. The setting is all heavy drapes, flickering candles and costumed guests, used to show the hidden vices of respectable society. Both actresses appear nude. The sequence is a brief detour from the main banking intrigue but helps establish the corruption of the characters who frequent the place. A lavish period production for fans of Follett’s sprawling historical sagas.
