Lena Headey in Cersei’s Cell Scene Before the Walk of Atonement, Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Lena Headey plays Cersei Lannister in “Game of Thrones” (2011 to 2019), and this dimly lit scene comes from the fifth season finale, “Mother’s Mercy” (2015), just before her walk of atonement. Held in a bare stone cell by the Faith Militant, Cersei has agreed to confess in exchange for her release. Here the septas of the order strip her of her clothes and cut off her long golden hair while she stands silently, trying to hold on to her dignity. The scene is almost entirely in shadow, lit only by thin shafts of light from above, and it is written as a moment of humiliation that strips Cersei of her status before she is made to walk through the city. Rebecca Van Cleave served as Lena Headey’s body double for the nude shots in this sequence. The episode is one of the most talked about in the show’s history and marks a turning point for Cersei, whose anger at this treatment drives her toward the destruction of the Sept in the next season. A grim, quietly powerful moment in the series.
