Rachel McAdams plays detective Ani Bezzerides in the second season of “True Detective” (2014 to 2024), HBO’s crime anthology, and this sequence comes from the episode “Church in Ruins” (2015). Ani goes undercover at a secluded mansion party thrown for wealthy and powerful men, hoping to find a missing woman. Partygoers, including Diana Terranova, Peta Jensen and Alix Lynx in small roles, fill the dim rooms. Before entering, Ani is given a pill, and as the night goes on its effects take hold. The scene follows her disoriented point of view as she struggles to stay alert, and her surroundings are intercut with flashes of a long haired man from her troubled past, a memory that haunts her throughout the season. The lighting is extremely low and the nudity among the guests is barely visible. The sequence is shot as a tense, nightmarish thriller set piece about danger and survival, ending as Ani finds the woman she has been looking for and fights to get them both out. It is one of the most talked about episodes of the season.
