Valérie Allain and Marion Peterson bare their breasts and butts in a surreal gym scene from “Aria” (1987), the eclectic anthology film that sets famous opera arias to short stories by legendary directors. In Jean Luc Godard’s playful segment set to Lully’s Armide, the two women wander completely naked through a gritty bodybuilding gym, trying everything to catch the attention of the muscle bound men working out around them. Valérie, with her long wavy hair, presses her bare body against a bodybuilder in red shorts as he grimly does pull ups, stroking his back and chest, while he refuses to look at her. Marion joins in, draping herself over another lifter with a towel and even brandishing a knife in mock frustration, yet the men stay fixed on their reps. The camera cuts between their naked curves and the sweaty, stony faces of the athletes. Later Valérie sits close to one of them, her face soft and wistful. Quirky, artful and very sensual, it is one of the most memorable and talked about segments in the film.
