Scenes from Sion Sono’s Netflix Thriller The Forest of Love (2019) with Eri Kamataki

This compilation comes from “The Forest of Love” (2019), the Japanese crime thriller written and directed by Sion Sono and released by Netflix. Kippei Shiina plays Joe Murata, a charismatic con man who seduces, manipulates and terrorises a group of people, including Mitsuko, played by Eri Kamataki, and her friend Taeko, played by Kyoko Hinami. The opening minutes cover intimate scenes between Murata and the women in cramped, dimly lit apartments, along with a brightly lit flashback showing how the two friends first met and the bond between them. From about the three minute mark the tone turns very dark: the compilation turns to the aftermath of a killing, as Murata’s followers dismember and dispose of a body in a blood soaked kitchen and bathroom. These scenes are graphic and are presented as horror, showing how completely Murata controls the people around him. The film is loosely inspired by a real Japanese murder case and is known for its long running time, extreme violence and frenzied energy. Viewers should be prepared for disturbing gore.
