Noriko Kijima in a Dark Assault Scene from The Crawler in the Attic (2016)

Noriko Kijima appears in “The Crawler in the Attic” (2016), a Japanese erotic thriller adapted from Edogawa Rampo’s classic story about a man who spies on the residents of a boarding house from the crawl space above their ceilings. The film keeps the period setting of old wooden rooms, tatami floors and paper screens, and leans into the story’s atmosphere of obsession and menace. In this scene her character is attacked in a tatami room by a man in a white shirt, who gags her with a cloth while she struggles against him. The sequence is shot as one of the film’s darkest moments and shows the cruelty of the men around her rather than anything romantic. Noriko appears nude during the scene. Elsewhere the story follows the attic dweller as his watching turns into darker schemes, including murder, and the residents below slowly realise they are not alone. Fans of Rampo adaptations and Japanese pink cinema will recognise the mix of period detail, psychological tension and taboo subject matter that runs through this version of the tale.
