Marie Martins de Sampaio shows full frontal nudity in a slow, intimate scene from the French short film “Simon et Suzanne, Ninon” (2013). In a warm, dimly lit atelier crowded with racks of clothes, wooden shelves and a glowing lamp, Marie, with a mass of dark curls tumbling over her shoulders, catches the eye of Simon, a shy, dark haired man in a striped shirt who can hardly believe what he is seeing. She steps behind the clothing rails and begins to undress, peeling off her top and slipping down to a pair of black knickers, her slender silhouette outlined against the soft light. Then she comes out from behind the racks completely topless and walks slowly toward him, her bare breasts on full show as she holds his gaze with a calm, confident expression. The camera lingers on Simon’s face as he stands frozen, torn between nerves and desire. Marie moves closer still, standing just inches from him with her back to the camera, the two sharing a long, charged silence. Tender, sensual and quietly electric, it is a beautifully understated moment of French cinema.
