Kanako Nishikawa in a Dark Domestic Scene from the Thriller Under Your Bed (2019)

Kanako Nishikawa stars as Chihiro in “Under Your Bed” (2019), the Japanese psychological thriller directed by Mari Asato and based on a novel by Ryo Ohishi. The story follows Mitsui, a lonely man who becomes obsessed with a woman he once knew and begins secretly hiding beneath the bed in her home. What he discovers there is that her husband abuses her. In this scene Chihiro appears nude, with bruises across her back, as her husband pushes her down and handles her roughly. Mitsui, unseen, lies under the bed and listens, unable or unwilling to act. The scene is shot in cold, muted colours and makes clear that this is domestic violence, with Chihiro’s fear and distress at the centre of it, rather than anything sensual. It is the turning point of the film, the moment where the stalker’s fixation becomes something closer to a twisted urge to rescue her. Under Your Bed is an unsettling, slow burning piece of Japanese genre cinema that has found a cult following among fans of dark thrillers.
